Catalina Macaw Mosaic Final by Dreamspirit Catalina Macaw Mosaic Final by Dreamspirit
Completed on November 28th, 2011

One of the gifts I gave my mother for her birthday in February was for both of us to go to a stained glass place and make mosaics together. She has always loved stained glass, and it seemed like a nice segue into doing something more advanced in stained glass later on.

You were supposed to cut up little bits and arrange them into a design, which you'd later grout. I, however.... have had to go back another four times since in order to finish my mosaic, which is somewhere between a mosaic and a formal stained glass project... >_> I couldn't help going all crazy on trying to detail and shape the glass on it.

I ended up going back and spending about 3-4 more hours painstakingly using a mix of grout colorants on the foreground elements after I'd already applied the grout sealant and stained glass polish because I just wasn't happy with the shade of the original grout mix. I think the extra time I put in really helped to make the figure "pop," and I'm looking forward to hanging him in his wood frame. :)

The shot on the left is dominantly front lit while the right is dominantly back lit. Some of the WIPs I had posted previously on DA are below. :)

I'm still not totally satisfied with the photographs of him, but they will have to do for now. I believe it is approximately 8 by 10 inches, but I will confirm that once I'm home. :) He's tiny!

This is completely stunning! The effort you've put into it really shows. Outstanding work.

I was actually wondering how you did the two grout colors? I'm doing a mosaic too, and I'd love to use a dark grout for the foreground and a light grout for the back. I was thinking maybe using a light one throughout and painting it later, but the way you used grout colorants makes me think it's worth a try.

First off: thank you so much for your humbling compliments: they really mean a lot to me. :)

This piece was the one and only time I've used grout colorant. The grout was lighter than I liked, so I purchased some darker colorant in order to tone the foreground elements. You sort of painted it on and then buffed it off of the glass, and the consistency was sort of like acrylic paint. I was pleased with the result, but it took a bit longer than I expected it would, but very much worth the time! Just keep in mind that for this sort of mosaic, you will only be able to use grout colorant on one side, since the other side is a sheet of glass. I hope that helps!

Thank you! Yes, it helps a great deal. How much time did it take you, if you don't mind me asking?

Thank you! :D I have to thank nature a bit for the colors though: Catalina macaws are definitely a sight to behold! I'm just glad there were so many colors of glass to choose from to try to even attempt to do one justice!

AH BEAUTIFUL! This looks so much fun and maybe full of finger cuts? I can't even decide which lighting I like more. Front is just so full of life and back is so warm and colorful.

Thank youuuu! There were a few finger cuts along the way (mostly due to my inexperience with this particular media), but nothing toooooo terrible, thankfully!

I'm not sure about the light either! I actually had one more that was full-on backlight, but it really washed it out because the camera turned most of the glass nearly white from the extreme contrast. :( Since I plan to hang it in front of my blinds (so I can see it even when the windows are up!), it will probably actually appear somewhere between these two here.

Man though, the hours that went into this were pretty crazy. I had no idea just how much I was in for when I designed it. :(

Thanks so much! He was a real challenge to work on (I'd never cut and grinded glass like this before!), but I'm glad I let myself do my own thing rather than stick to the "chop up random bits and fill in shapes." Having the feathers kinda sculpted I think worked out really well and created a nice contrast to the simple forms of the leaves and the more "randomized" background. :) I just wish he photographed as well as he looks irl! My scanner laughed when I tried. :(
