Life is busy, and somewhere along the way it became a lot more rare for me to actually sit down and do "gift art" for friends and family.
As I'm sure other artists out there can attest: gift art is best done when it's just that: a precious, heartfelt gift rather than an expectation. It's not fun to spend hours and hours of time on a piece of art that feels unappreciated, especially when time can be so fleeting.
Anyway, I digress: one of the things I realized a few months ago was how rarely I create art as gifts anymore, even to people who are _incredibly_ important in my life and who I KNOW would appreciate it. So while life is indeed busy, I've decided to be a bit better about slipping in a project here and there amid work, commissions, and personal art.
This piece was done for
. I could go on for hours and hours (probably forever, actually) about how important she is to me, and how humbled I am by her friendship, but well, awesome people deserve an awesome mug! Mugs also help promote more tea drinking, I hear, which is something I hugely approve of. 
This is the unfired version of the mug, and the whole damn thing has 4 layers of paint all over. It took... well over 11 hours to paint, and the whole time I kept telling myself that the reason people don't paint many detailed mugs like this is that painting on curves like this is just... quite an act of patience and resolve.
The final fired version of the mug was fired 5 times by Color Me Mine in their attempt to repair a chip (
), and with each fire, the image got more and more blurry, so I thought it would be nice to upload this version since the details are a bit more visible and crisp.
The dragon and gryphon sitting on the Sequoia's branches are supposed to represent Cindy and I skygazing.
They are pretty tiny and would fit on a dime.
