Homeland - 2012 Redo - Full by Dreamspirit Homeland - 2012 Redo - Full by Dreamspirit
Completed on the evening of January 15th, 2012

As I mentioned before, somewhere on January 14th, I managed to overwrite my original file with something 20% the total size. :-/ As such, what you see here is the actual size of the piece.

Considering it was originally supposed to be a 2012, updated version of this piece from 2006: I am incredibly pleased how it turned out.

I learned a heck of a lot working on it and really challenged myself with everything from the countryside, through to some attempted perspective, four figures, and some appropriate lighting for the scene. I tried to improve upon the layout and design of the original from 2006 and to hopefully bring out a sort of warm and inviting feeling of a long-awaited homecoming.

I struggled not to lose the sort of loose painterly feel I began with, and I hope you guys enjoy it. :)

Painted from start to finish in Photoshop CS5.

Personal Story Art.

It really means a lot to me that you like the atmosphere, landscape, and sky of this piece because they were things I really challenged myself with on this piece that were more than a few steps out of my comfort zone. :)

It means so much to me to be able to even vaguely capture a scene from my mind's eye well-enough to be willing to share it, but it means so much more to hear that folks out there like yourself liked it well-enough to warrant taking a moment to leave me encouraging feedback on it. So just.. thank you for the compliments: they mean a lot to me. :)

No problem; I feel it is an incredible piece and love those kinds of scenes. Pushing beyond a comfort zone is something I want to start doing soon with my art. Thank you for your very kind reply; it is nice hearing a kind word from you, so thank you as well. Will watch for more. Stay positive and good luck.

This is absolutely stunning - the sweeping landscape, the not-quite-silhouettes. The somewhat foggy color scheme lends it an almost dreamlike quality - as if the character's can't quite believe they're seeing their homeland at last. Plus, both horses look really cool. :D

First off: thank you so very much for taking the time to leave me such a thoughtful comment! I really do appreciate it. :)

I'd originally envisioned this with silhouettes (see: [link] ), but :icon00frostfyre00: 's feedback really helped to make me see that they warranted a bit more attention than that to define the figures, and also that, well, with the lighting as it was, it was really unlikely the figures would actually be in full-on-silhouette. I'm really thankful he gave me that feedback, too, because I really think it helped the "read" of the piece, and kind of bring it all together into a more cohesive whole.

I'm glad you like the color scheme and ambiance as well! It took... a few more passes than I'd like to admit to finally settle on something that emulated a feeling of warm dawn light and an inviting mood that's well.. welcoming. :) You don't have any idea how much it means to me to see that viewers unfamiliar with the characters and their journey can "feel" that sort of scene as well. It's really, really humbling and gratifying both at once. :)

Hehe! I'm glad you like the horses! While I love equines, it can be really tricky to draw them from scratch in perspective, I'm fairly happy with how these two turned out. I am not sure there ever was such a happy skeletal horse, to boot! ;)

Wow, seeing the other silhouettes, I'm even more glad you decided to detail them - something about it changed the mood just perfectly. :D I'm also really delighted that I read the homecoming/welcoming feel right - I wasn't sure, and it's almost as heartwarming to me to find out I gleaned the proper atmosphere from your art.
The perspective in the skeletal horse is really incredibly impressive especially! That's the kind of thing that seems impossible to find a reference for, so... even more amazing. xd

Thank you so very kindly for your compliments! I will admit that working with this type of lighting and color-palette puts me more than a few steps outside of my comfort zone, so it it really encouraging to have such great feedback. :)

I'm glad you like the skeletal horse as well! She's a dependable old gal. ;)

Moar arts!? Moar writing too! :) But yes: some of both. I think I have about.... 5 pieces....? that are over 60% complete, so I'll try to put a bit more pressure on finishing those up between smaller projects so I can get them off the back-burner and out of the way. The one sitting beside me here is a perfect example of that. >_< I think I even bought the base (un-drilled) for it when you were out in 2010?

And tealllll..... teallllllll!

Thank you so much for the compliments! I'm glad you liked seeing the progression between the original and this redo. While I certainly enjoy (and indulge myself in) a lot of greyscale work, there is quite a lot more you can get across in color pieces, it seems, so I'm glad I took the time to try to sit down and really consider the landscape, lighting, and overall mood I was going for with this scene. I learned so much from it, and I'm glad you enjoy the dreamy quality of it!

Thank you so very much for the compliments and understanding over the file-size thing. While the latter is indeed a pity, it's not the first time that or worse has happened in preserving a digital piece. It is, however, a lesson on being a bit more careful, and to make sure I'm keeping multiple back-ups along the way rather than just over-writing one as I go.

Ah well! At least it wasn't a thumbnail! ;)

Thank you! Part of me really wanted to do more with the clouds, but I worried that doing so might overpower the composition, so I tried to give them a bit of personality without going overboard. :) There weren't clouds in the original drawings I did, but I feel like they really added something to the piece and made it a bit more inviting.

I don't think I paint clouds very often (I really should to it more often), but you might also enjoy this piece from more than a few years back. :)
