About fifteen years ago or so, aside from helping with a bit of animal rehabilitation, I used to do a bit of falconry/hawking, and was apprenticed under a master falconer. As a part of that program, I was permitted to capture and train a Red Tailed Hawk I named "Isabeau" (as a homage to the movie "Ladyhawke"). When I moved across country, I couldn't take her with me, and so I had to let her fly free once again. The whole endeavor was quite an experience for me, and remains very close to my heart. Before then and since, Red Tailed Hawks remain one of my favorite animals.
Isabeau shed only a few feathers while I had her, and among those, only two tail feathers. After keeping this one for so many years, I realized I really wanted to make something more of it, so I crafted it into a small feather fan as a gift for the seester of my heart, .
While I'd considered painting it, like some of my other fans, I worried I might muck it up and ruin the natural beauty of it, so I instead decided to leave it unpainted.
The feather includes black suede, native glass beads, glass pony beads, onyx beads, white tiger's eye beads, and bronze dance-cones. It is about 3 inches wide and 20 inches long.
Apologies for the particularly poor photography. I was in a bit of a rush to get it packed-up and mailed-out before I left town for the holidays.
OMG SOMEONE ELSE THAT KNOWS LADYHAWK!!!!! When I lived in Europe, that movie was played on SOME channel, at least 1-2 times a week... in North America, it's a movie that basically NO ONE ever hears of. Every studio I work in- I have to promote it and get folks to watch it. It's an AMAZING movie!!!
As for the feather- this is BOMBASTIC. Makes it so much more, when it comes from beloved source, and given to a beloved person.
I totally agree! It's one of my favorite movies (and it's probably why Oberon is a Fresian >_>)! For some, the score really dates it back to the 80s, but I still enjoy it (and watch it at least a couple times a year).
I'm glad you like the story surrounding the feather, btw! <3
I'm glad you enjoy hearing about the experiences/stories behind the pieces! I know not everyone reads them (or that some might be a bit TLDR), but I enjoy reading about the background of pieces from other artists and sharing my own bits and pieces when I can.
Thanks! And if you ever need any "pro tips," just send me a note or email or whatever. I'm happy to help offer insight from what I've learned over the years.
