For me, it was a sort of tri-fold problem: 1.) The shirt was fuzzy, making painting anything resembling "smooth" on it rather frustrating, 2.) Many of my paints were semi-transparent, so I, like you, ended up having to basically do a silhouette of the image I was going for in white as an initial layer, 3.) The shirt being black didn't make #2 any easier, especially since I really hated the idea of locking myself into a silhouette so early on, but it ended up being for the best after I realizes just the time it would take for the "white" layer would be many hours. Luckily, after that point, finally working with layers of color was "fun" by comparison.
And I'm so glad you like her face and hair! I loved finally getting to the point I could really "shade" them.
