WoW Worgen Prot Warrior Color by Dreamspirit WoW Worgen Prot Warrior Color by Dreamspirit
Completed - July 4th, 2011

This isn't any character in particular, just a fan art (Protection warrior worgen) in the Warcraft style. This is also the first time I've tried my hand at drawing a worgen as well. :)

The motivation behind this was the idea that if raids and such played out in a more realistic sense, it would actually be the tank(s) that would be busy protecting their peers. And, well, if you fight dragons, it might look a bit like this. ;)

I opted to hone in on a section of the much larger greyscale version of this piece to act as a guide for the color version uploaded here.

It was digitally painted entirely in Photoshop CS3 and CS5.

Hi, very nice painting. I like the bright blast thing that he blocked using his shield :)

Just curious why do you use PS CS 3 and 5 to paint? Does one have advantage over the other???

Thanks, I'm glad you like him! :)

And fair question! I owned CS3 when I started this piece and upgraded to CS5 midway through (I generally skip every other Adobe product cycle so I can more easily afford the upgrades). I really adore CS5, though!

Indeed it is an awesome set, WotLK screwed up a few things but for armor sets and environment it really was the best. And you are very welcome :)

The posing in this picture is perfect. Not only is he lifting up his shield to ward off the flame, the angle and his posture show he is throwing all of himself in front of the dragon's breath to save his allies from harm. Very dynamic, and well colored.

Aww, thank you so much! :) I was definitely trying to push myself to make the pose look as dynamic and "epic" as I could pull off, but I actually ended up going back after I did this "color closeup" version and reworked the entire greyscale composition. You should see that one up above in a thumbnail form, but suffice to say: I feel like that one is an even stronger piece. I have to admit: I'm probably done with working on this for now, but my goodness has it been a great learning experience along the way! It's fantastic to see what we're capable of when we really push ourselves. :)

Thanks so much again for taking the time to leave me such great feedback! I truly appreciate it!

Haha! Why thank you. :) I actually just completed a sort of "rework" of this piece that's a lot more dynamic than this one here: [link] I've really enjoyed pushing it even further and yet trying to retain some of the original "feel" of it. I definitely like the "look" of the race. It's been a real challenge trying to do them justice, and I really appreciate you taking the time to leave me feedback. :)

Thank you so very much! :) It's definitely been an interesting process pushing it further and further with each pass, but it was very rewarding finally doing a color pass. :) There will be one more pass coming up in the next month or so as well.

Wow, the detail on this is quite amazing! I love the complimentary color palette you used with the purple and yellow, and the lighting came out very dynamic. It was cool to see the process. When you layer your colors over the grayscale in PS, what layer settings/styles do you use?

Hey there! :)

First off: thank you so much for the compliments on this piece! It really means a lot to me when people take the time to leave me feedback! Sometimes with my color work I try and tone the piece so that it isn't truly greyscale before working over top of it, and this was a sort of different take on that type of approach. I like having it so that the shadows have color to them rather than simply being darker or lighter than their surroundings.

As far as my approach for this piece goes: you're actually in luck! I was LiveStreaming the VERY initial stages of laying down color and you can watch (and fast forward through) the recording here: [link]

I actually didn't use many layers on top of the greyscale image. From memory, I believe there were five:

1.) The "lowest" layer was a fill layer of a sort of maroon/deep purple that I set on "Overlay" to tone the whole piece.
2.) The layer atop of that is what you see me working in on that LiveStream capture: it's a layer set on "color" that I used to sort of work in my lights (oranges and yellows) and shadows (purples). I actually ended up cropping the piece tighter to create the image above, though.
3.) Next I had a layer atop that set on overlay in order to "pop" the yellows and intermix in some more red tones to keep the yellow/purples from getting too muddy.
4.) Atop that was my primary work layer which was set on "Normal" where I detailed in painterly highlights and such manually and refined the armor, etc.
5.) Atop that was a final overlay layer which I used mostly blues and yellows to make the side closest to the flame more "yellow" and facing away more "blue." I tried to borrow from surrounding areas so that the colors bounced around and borrowed from each other at this stage as well.

Some of the layers had reduced transparency as well, but I hope that helped to explain some of how I approached this piece. If you have any additional questions, I'd be happy to try to try to answer them, and I hope that was helpful to you! :)
