The Lightbearer - Final by Dreamspirit The Lightbearer - Final by Dreamspirit
Completed on July 7th, 2012

A small ACEO-sized (2.5 x 3.5 inches) gift for the late :iconautumn-rains: and her husband.

Alas, the scan of this piece truly does not do this piece justice, especially since there are a lot of iridescent inks mixed in there that make parts of it truly shimmer.

We all have people that touch our lives and leave a lasting impression, and Caroline was certainly one of those people for me. She was dear friend and inspiration to me, and was actually the first person I told about the surreal hummingbird experience I had shortly before my maternal grandmother's passing ( story related here: ).

When I found out Caroline's health had started to fail her at last, I began work on this piece, but only completed it after her passing. As such, it's been a strangely haunting sort of mourning and art therapy for me.

Fly free with your sister, Caroline. And thank you, for everything.

Graphite, brown Copic Multiliner, watercolor, gouache, and acrylic ink on watercolor paper.

Personal Art.

Gorgeous, love the reflected light.

Also, very moved by your story.. I lost my grandmother just yesterday...
I try and find comfort in the fact that those we lose will always live in our hearts and memories

First off: my deepest condolences to you and your family during this difficult time. And indeed: I like to think that part of their legacy is they way they touched our lives, so that we can live on the stronger and richer for it.

In any case, thank you for taking the time to leave me a comment, and I'm glad you like the art and the reflected light. It took a bit for me to figure out how I could light and color a white creature that wouldn't look bland, and I'm pleased with how it turned out.

Thank you so much

It's a bit weird but I've noticed that even complete strangers on the internet sending nice messages of support really do help. So thanks :thanks:

Wonderful tribute to her memory, I am sure she will send you hummingbirds as a sign. Your tiny artwork seems to fill a world with beautiful emotion. Like a little candle flickering in the darkness, I hope the hummingbird wings continues to guide that light on it's journey.

Thank you for your kind words, Autumn. :) They've truly become a symbol all unto themselves in recent months, but I'd have it no other way.

It is truly a delicate piece that carries the essence of a spirit, and ti's capacity to illuminate our lives. The Hummingbird is a jewel on it's own- and your painting skill made this justice.

I really like this little bird! Birds are difficult creatures to draw, in my humble opinion, but you did a great job! I also really like the little details you put unto its wings :D

Thanks so much for the compliment on the piece, and I would like to think she did, although Cycstic Fibrosis was not kind to she or her sister.

It's very beautiful, and I'm just curious based on your art and your DA name are you interested in Native American myths or tales in any way? I just got that feel from looking at it.

Thanks so much for the compliment, and I do indeed take an interest in Native American mythologies, cultures, and the like. :) That's very cool that this piece gave you a hint of that particular "vibe"!

I forget which tribe had a Hummingbird spirit, I want to say Hopi, and that's what I thought of when I saw it. Your art is beautiful nonetheless.

Yeah, I know a few (I can't recall which precisely) also viewed hummingbirds as messengers between the realm of the dead and the living, so using one seemed especially appropriate in this case. :)

My thanks again for your kind words.
